Heavyweight 240gsm faded black oversized t-shirt with back print

T-Shirt GSM Explained: Lightweight vs. Heavyweight Tees (142 vs. 206 vs. 240)

Every tee has a number hiding in the product details: GSM. Most people skip it. It's the single best predictor of whether a shirt will drape like streetwear or cling like a gym freebie.

What does GSM mean on a t-shirt?

GSM stands for grams per square meter, the weight of the fabric. Higher GSM means more cotton in the same area: thicker, denser, more structured. US brands sometimes list it in ounces per square yard instead. Divide GSM by about 34 to convert.

Weight GSM oz/yd² Feels like
Lightweight under 150 under 4.5 Soft, breathable, drapes close
Midweight 150 to 200 4.5 to 6 Everyday tee, some body
Heavyweight 200+ 6+ Thick, structured, holds a boxy shape

Our three weights, side by side

142gsm: the lightweight layer

About 4.2 oz. Combed ring-spun cotton, regular fit. Soft, breathable, great under an overshirt or on hot days. This is the weight of our Basics, like the SOCIAL ERROR logo tee and the SE Mini Logo.

206gsm: the garment-dyed heavyweight

About 6.1 oz. Relaxed fit, garment-dyed ring-spun cotton. Thick enough to feel premium, soft enough to live in. See SMILE and ART.

240gsm: the oversized faded tee

About 7.1 oz. Boxy oversized fit, garment-dyed and faded. This is the weight that makes a graphic tee look like a statement instead of merch: it holds its shape, hides nothing and gets better with wear. Most of the Running in Time drop lives here.

Is a heavyweight t-shirt worth it?

  • Drape: heavy cotton falls straight from the shoulders. That's the boxy streetwear silhouette, without trying.
  • Durability: denser knit resists stretching, twisting and see-through thinning.
  • Print: big back prints sit better on a stable fabric that doesn't ripple.
  • Trade-off: it's warmer. On a 95°F day, 142gsm wins.

Which GSM should you choose?

  • Want the oversized streetwear look? 240gsm.
  • Want thick but a little easier? 206gsm.
  • Layering or hot climate? 142gsm.

Weight also changes how a tee fits. Heavier fabric reads bigger and boxier in the same size. More on that in How Should an Oversized T-Shirt Fit?

FAQ

Is 240 GSM a heavyweight t-shirt?

Yes. Anything above about 200gsm is considered heavyweight. 240gsm is solidly in that range.

Is higher GSM always better?

No. It's better for structure and durability, not for breathability. Pick for the fit and season you want.

Do heavyweight tees shrink less?

Garment-dyed heavyweight tees are washed during dyeing, so most shrinkage has already happened. Cold wash and low heat keep it that way. See how to wash graphic tees.
